EVERY homeowner should know how to turn off their water heater.
In case of emergency:
1. Turn off the gas or electric heater: For gas, turn the dial on top of the thermostat from the “on” position to the “off” position. For electric, turn off the power supply to the water heater at the appliance or circuit breaker.
2. Turn off the water supply. The knob is located at the top of the unit.
3. Drain water heater (if necessary). Attach a hose to the drain faucet near the bottom of the unit and run the other end of the hose to a lower location where hot water will not cause damage. Then, open the hot water side of the faucet.
